Romancing the Ruby

09-May-12

I feel compelled to start learning Ruby on Rails.

I’ve been searching out work lately and a background in programming is something I once had but am now lacking: I need it again.
I used to write code/programs quite a bit and at one time I possessed a nice intermediate understanding of HTML, Basic, C, Visual Basic and others.
All I’ve been exposed to in the last few years is basic apple-scripting and the odd web 2.0 mod job (basic cuts and pastes).

I’ve always wanted more control –I continue to want more control.
I will be reading “Why’s (Poignant) Guide to Ruby”.

Here’s a delightful line from the text:
“So you’ve got to know that synergy doesn’t actually mean synergy in this book. I can’t do normal synergy. No, in this book, synergy means cartoon foxes.”

Adventures Speculating Wildly Amidst Mission Parameters

A swamp is a wetland with some flooding of large areas but also every event you’ve ever been to: teeming with life and potential but often stagnant and hiding some exploitable resource; soaked with liquor and the sweat of assholes but often corrupted and betraying surfaces once meant for measured response.

Let’s not kid ourselves (they aren’t) events are terribly boring and stupid –nothing ever happens (that’s why you stopped going). When the coolest thing you can do is drink yourself stupid or fuck or yell at people it’s no surprise really. Our co-dependence is estranged and forced upon “the couple” we stumble into the abyss of the night –starving– (or don’t) an ever-repeating series of moves everyone expects and no one really cares about culminating in a sleepover that doesn’t end until one dies of cardiovascular disease and the other commits suicide (in a car). Did you (forget/ever know how to) really dance?

#ASWAMP is a #wild adventure of speculation amidst mission parameters meant to challenge, critique or interact with the paper-bag fare we’ve come to expect. And I don’t mean we subvert or invert our “humanity” to do something absurdly dangerous or stupid or violent: we contort and confound expectation and exaltation with primacy, intent, rule & vision. We are pragmatists and socialists: we’ve come to be rejected.

#ASWAMP will now replace the previously occurring Socialitis @ the Dependent and interweave with an event evangelism project called EVE (East Van Events).

If you want to join the adventure or have an idea for further adventures @viobot
-or- if you are already are adventuring wildy with unmentioned mission parameters

Ordinary “run-of-the-mill” Adventure-game?

Re: Double-Fine

When Lucasarts dissolved it’s adventure division (closely approximate to Sierra’s own Black Monday where Al Lowe and the gang were universally pinkslipped), they portioned into several directions, but most notably Telltale and Double Fine. Telltale was mostly responsible for a series of bad CSI spot-the-difference style games, and a number of games based on the ‘Bonetown’ franchise of comics. It wasn’t until they got recently ahold of the Sam & Max license(also an ex Lucasarts franchise – Steve Purcell was also an artistic collaborator on the Monkey Island games) that they found a foothold in the new generation of adventure games. On the other hand, Double Fine (Schafer’s company) began work almost immediately on Psychonauts.

The Set-Up

Have any of you read content from The Dependent ?

I’ve been getting to know the contributors for a couple months now and we’re (Brendan & I) going to begin regularly creating content for them starting this month.

The content will be sonic and visual explorations and texts concerning spaces in and around Vancouver –mostly image-audio pieces.

I’ve been staring at this bit of screen for the last 35 minutes, trying to make sense out of what is fundamentally the hollowest, emptiest part of my existence. But I can’t. I have maybe two hours to make this happen for myself. In the next room, my wife is watching Degrassi Junior High on netflix, and all I can think about is that fake song they lashed together for Degrassi’s premier prog-rock ensemble, ‘Zit Remedy’.

Wall of ARTifacts

It’s funny how you can spend so much time giving other people advice on how they should organize things and not do any organizing yourself.
And by “you” I mean “I”.
And by “any” I mean “enough”

Here’s a photo of the wall in my space:
